The government’s decision to remove the Bona Vacantia list of unclaimed estates, citing a recent case of organized will fraud, is a thinly veiled pretext for seizing more assets. The list itself isn’t driving fraud; rather, it’s the lack of robust enforcement by police and other institutions that emboldens criminals. Shutting down public access to this information only obscures transparency and undermines efforts to reunite estates with rightful heirs.
For over two years, I’ve faced relentless obstacles in reporting a potential case of will fraud, only to be met with inaction from the Office of the Public Guardian, the Serious Fraud Office, the police, and even the media. This isn’t just a failure of the UK’s probate system — it’s a broader dereliction of duty by the very institutions tasked with upholding the rule of law.
